Just before 1 a.m. Wednesday, the long-awaited list was released with pardons for 73 people and commutations for another 70.
Many of the names would be unfamiliar to the average American, but the list also included figures from high-profile cases and people with ties to Trumpland. Notably missing from the list were WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and Tiger King star Joe Exotic—whose supporters had pushed for pardons. Trump also did not issue pre-emptive pardons for any members of him family, his attorney Rudy Giuliani, or himself.
Four people who received clemency were supported by lawyer Alan Dershowitz, who was part of the defense team during Trump’s first impeachment. Among them is Sholam Weiss, who was sentenced to more than 800 years in prison in connection with a massive fraud scheme that destroyed a life insurance company and stripped its customers of their savings. Weiss fled the country in the middle of the trial but was captured in Austria and extradited.
Others who got a reprieve from Trump on the eve of Joe Biden’s inauguration include:
Death Row records co-founder Michael “Harry-O” Harris
Michael “Harry-O” Harris served about three decades after his 1988 conviction for attempted murder during a kidnapping. In 1992, from behind bars, Harris granted $1.5 million in seed money to Suge Knight to start the iconic record label, which went on to feature iconic rappers such as Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur, and Snoop Dogg. Snoop launched a lobbying bid to grant Harris clemency in the president’s final days in office, The Daily Beast reported on Monday. Harris had sought to be released from prison earlier this year, citing his autoimmune disorder as a possible risk factor for COVID-19, but that request was declined.
Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick
Former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was slated to remain behind bars until 2037 after being convicted in a major corruption scandal. Since being sentenced in October 2013, he has fought to be released, sending a letter to Trump in 2018 in the hopes of a commutation. Several of Kilpatrick’s allies, including billionaire Peter Karmanas, had also started pushing Trump to grant clemency in recent months.
Rapper Kodak Black, real name Bill Kahan Kapri, was serving a three-year prison term after pleading guilty to weapons charges in 2019. The Florida native had admitted in court documents to knowingly making false statements in applications for firearms. The 23-year-old was also charged separately with first-degree criminal sexual conduct for allegedly assaulting a woman after a concert.
Ken Kurson, the former editor of The New York Observer and friend of Jared Kushner, was arrested last fall for what prosecutors described as a “pattern of stalking and harassment against three victims.” Authorities became aware of Kurson’s alleged crimes in 2018 while he was undergoing an FBI background check for an unpaid advisory role in the Trump administration that The Daily Beast first revealed.
In a statement announcing Kurson’s full pardon, the White House described him as an “upstanding citizen” and said that the investigation into his alleged cyberstalking “only began because Mr. Kurson was nominated to a role within the Trump Administration.”
Former California Rep. Randall “Duke” Cunningham
Randy “Duke” Cunningham left Congress in 2005 as a disgraced felon after pleading guilty to a slew of charges, including tax evasion, mail fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit bribery. He served seven years behind bars for accepting at least $2.4 million in bribes, at one point reportedly even using a “bribe menu” showing the exact sums he would require to deliver a contract.
Trump granted him a conditional pardon late Tuesday, with the White House noting that he “continues to serve his community” after his release in 2013 and that “former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich strongly supports this pardon.”
Robert “Bob” Zangrillo, real estate developer
Robert “Bob” Zangrillo is a Miami real estate developer charged in the Operation Varsity Blues college admissions scandal. He allegedly conspired to bribe college coaches at the University of Southern California to admit unqualified students via athletics programs. His trial was set for September 2021.
Paul Erickson, ex-boyfriend of Russian agent Maria Butina
Paul Erickson is perhaps best known for helping Russian spy Maria Butina worm her way into the Republican Party, but that is not what landed him in jail. Erickson was convicted of defrauding oil investors in July 2020 and sentenced to seven years in prison. Butina herself was deported in the fall of 2020 for failing to register as a foreign agent. Erickson’s pardon was supported by Kellyanne Conway, according to the White House’s statement. By granting clemency to Erickson, Trump lashed out one last time at Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference, writing, “This pardon helps right the wrongs of what has been revealed to be perhaps the greatest witch hunt in American History.”
Former Google and Uber Engineer Anthony Levandowski
Anthony Levandowski, the former Uber executive convicted of stealing trade secrets from Google’s self-driving car subsidiary Waymo, received a full pardon from Trump. He was fined hundreds of thousands of dollars and sentenced to 18 months in prison but had not begun serving it out yet. The pardon, according to a statement from the White House, was supported by right-wing tech entrepreneurs and Trump donors Palmer Luckey and Peter Thiel.
Ex-Chair of the North Carolina GOP Robin Hayes
Robin Hayes pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI during a North Carolina corruption scandal. Investigators were probing a bribery scandal in which massive Republican donor Greg Lindberg offered a $2 million payment to remove the state officials responsible for regulating his business.
Aviem Sella, former Israeli air force officer
Aviem Sella was indicted on three counts of espionage against the U.S. for recruiting the notorious Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard, who worked for U.S. Navy Intelligence. Pollard was jailed for 30 years, but is treated as something of a hero in Israel. His pardon was supported by Bibi Netanyahu and Miriam Adelson, the widow of Trump mega-donor Sheldon Adelson, who was buried in Jerusalem last week.
Second stimulus check: IRS says the $600 payments are now on their way. But how soon is now?
Millions of Americans are eagerly awaiting their second stimulus checks of $600 for each eligible adult and child. The IRS on Tuesday said it had started to distribute the checks via direct deposit that evening, a process that will extend into next week.
The tax agency added that it is mailing paper checks on December 30 to people who don't have their bank account info on file with the IRS. But even so, the timeline leaves many people wondering when exactly the check will land in their accounts — especially as the IRS' website for checking one's payment status is unavailable.
The second stimulus check follows a rocky rollout this spring for more than 160 million stimulus payments directed by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. That relief effort, which directed $1,200 for each eligible adult and $500 for each eligible child, encountered a number of problems, such as a delay in payment to people who didn't have their bank account information on file with the IRS, as was the case for some Social Security recipients.
The IRS will use the same method to get the money to people as it did in the first round, said Mark Steber, chief tax information officer at Jackson Hewitt.
"If taxpayers received a direct deposit then, they will again; if they received a mailed check or debit card then, they will again," he said.
But the IRS' "Get My Payment" website is currently offline. The agency said it expects its "Get My Payment" tool to be operating again "in a few days," although it didn't specify a date.
That's a problem, although the site should be up by next week, based on the IRS' statement, Steber noted. "The updated website should include information on both the first and second stimulus payments," he said.
That website allowed people this spring to provide or update their bank account data to the IRS. It also informed people when their checks would be landing in their accounts. But it, too, had glitches. Some people reported getting error messages such as "Payment status not available," while others got locked out of the site.
"Payments are automatic"
On December 29, the IRS said the "payments are automatic" for people who filed a 2019 tax return, as well as for people who receive Social Security benefits, Railroad Retirement benefits or Supplemental Security Income and Veterans Affairs beneficiaries who didn't file a tax return.
The IRS added that people who successfully used the Non-Filers tool by November 21 — a site created to make sure that people who don't normally file tax returns would get a payment — would receive their second stimulus checks automatically.
The payments won't be taxed because they are not considered earned income, Steber said. But, he added, "taxpayers should keep their Notice 1444 from the IRS, which shows the exact amount they received, to reconcile their payments so they can receive any additional amount due on their 2020 tax return."
How much will I get?
The IRS is sending $600 to each eligible adult and child — not the $2,000 that had been pushed by President Donald Trump.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday blocked an attempt to vote on the $2,000 stimulus checks approved by the House, but resurrected the higher payments in a new bill that includes other items on Mr. Trump's wish list, including the repeal of Section 230, which shields social media companies from lawsuits.
While it's unlikely the stimulus checks will get bumped up to $2,000, the Treasury Department said it would be able to handle that possibility. "If additional legislation is enacted to provide for an increased amount, Economic Impact Payments that have been issued will be topped up as quickly as possible," according to a Treasury statement on December 29.
The second round of payments directs $600 for single people who earn up to $75,000 and $1,200 to married couples who earn up to $150,000.
The amount then declines for people earning above those thresholds, and completely phases out for single people who earn over $87,000 and married couples with earnings over $174,000. Children under 17 years old will receive $600 each. Children who are 17 are ineligible, as are adult dependents, such as college students and some disabled people claimed as dependents on their relatives' tax returns.
More people are eligible for the second round of stimulus checks than in the first, the IRS added.
"Under the earlier CARES Act, joint returns of couples where only one member of the couple had a Social Security number were generally ineligible for a payment – unless they were a member of the military," the IRS noted. "But this month's new law changes and expands that provision."
Under the new relief bill, the U.S. government will allow mixed-status households of American citizens with undocumented family members to receive stimulus checks that they were denied under the first round of legislation in the spring, and which sparked several lawsuits.
Lil Wayne reportedly sold Young Money catalog along with his masters
Lil Wayne made headlines last week when it was announced that he sold his masters for $100 millon back in June, but new reports claim he gave away more than the rights to his music.
According to Music Business Worldwide, a pending lawsuit reveals that the No Ceilings rapper’s settlement also sold Young Money’s entire catalog to Universal Music Group.
The suit reads, “Plaintiffs are informed and believe… that, subsequent to [Sweeney’s] termination [as Wayne’s manager], specifically in or about June of 2020, Lil Wayne was able to sell the Young Money Masters to Universal Music Group for an excess of $100 million.”
Wayne helped to develop the careers of Nicki Minaj, Drake, and Tyga when he signed them to Young Money Records. Over the years, the artists released multiple projects under the label.
Drake’s albums before and including 2018’s Scorpion, for example, were released under Wayne’s record label, but all other projects since have come out under his own imprint, October’s Very Own. Nicki’s entire catalog, including Queen, has been released under Young Money, and as for Tyga, he stopped dropping music with the label since he decided to release his fourth studio album, The Gold Album: 18th Dynasty, independently.
Wayne’s decision to sell his masters as well as the Young Money catalog comes at a time when artists are trying to obtain the rights to their masters.
Kanye West particularly had a hard time trying to buy his masters back from Universal, prompting one of his social media rants. “I need to see everybody’s contracts at Universal and Sony,” West tweeted. “I’m not gonna watch my people be enslaved. I’m putting my life on the line for my people. The music industry and the NBA are modern day slave ships. I’m the new Moses.”
'Verzuz' battle between Ashanti, Keyshia Cole postponed after Ashanti tests positive for COVID-19
Ashanti and Keyshia Cole's highly anticipated "Verzuz" battle was rescheduled last minute Saturday after Ashanti announced she had tested positive for COVID-19.
"Ashanti tested positive for COVID-19 beforehand, and we cannot put anyone at risk in the process," read a post from the official "Verzuz" account. "First time this has struck us so close to showtime. We apologize to our incredible audience! Get well soon, Ashanti ???????????? Wear a mask, stay inside, and take COVID-19 seriously. It’s truly affecting our community."
Ashanti, 40, assured her fans on social media that she was "ok and not in any pain" and was working with "Verzuz" and Apple Music to see if it would be possible for her to continue the battle virtually from home.
"Never in a million years did I think I would get COVID," Ashanti said while occasionally coughing in a video posted to her Instagram account Saturday. "I'm super bummed. I'm still ready to do it tonight, though... I got my computer set up and I'm super ready to do it, but we don't think the technical aspect of things is going to be perfect."
The battle will now take place January 9.
Ashanti and Keyshia Cole will go head to head in the next Verzuz battle.
After kicking off their second season last month with an epic musical battle between Gucci Mane and Jeezy, "Verzuz" announced earlier this month it would return with another iconic matchup: Ashanti and Cole.
"Yeah, it’s official! The paperwork is IN," the show announced Friday on Instagram. "It’s a legendary Ladies Night on Saturday December 12th with @ashanti and @keyshiacole. Which Libra you got?!"
"Verzuz," the webcast series created in March at the start of the coronavirus pandemic by legendary producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz, began as a virtual DJ battle but has since evolved into must-see appointment viewing for music fans thanks to its nostalgia factor and behind-the-scenes appeal featuring a range of different musical styles, including R&B, hip-hop, gospel and dancehall.
Notable battles have included Brandy and Monica, Ludacris and Nelly, Teddy Riley and Babyface, and Erykah Badu and Jill Scott.

Before she was Biden’s running mate, Harris was his opponent in the Democratic presidential primary. She is one of many Black American women to have aimed for the highest office in the land despite great odds.
Hands that once picked cotton
African Americans have faced many hurdles to achieving political power in the United States, among them slavery, Jim Crow and disenfranchisement.
I address issues like these in the government and minority politics classes I teach as a political science professor. But I also tell my students that Black women have a history of political ambition and achievement. As the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. said in 1984 about the progress Black voters made last century, “Hands that once picked cotton will now pick a president.”
Now, Black women, who once had no chance of even voting for president – much less being president – see one of their own a step away from the Oval Office.
‘Unsuitable’ for the job?
Kamala Harris is a Democrat who served as California’s attorney general and later one of its senators. But, historically, most Black female presidential candidates have run as independents.
In 1968, 38-year-old Charlene Mitchell of Ohio became the first Black woman to run for president, as a communist. Like many other African Americans born in the 1930s, Mitchell joined the Communist Party because of its emphasis on racial and gender equality. Black female communists fought Jim Crow, lynchings and unfair labor practices for men and women of all races.
Only one Black woman has ever pursued the Republican nomination: Angel Joy Charvis, a religious conservative from Florida, who wanted to use her 1999 candidacy to “to recruit a new breed of Republican.”
Unbought and unbossed
Those Black female presidential candidates were little known. But as the first Black female member of Congress, Shirley Chisholm had years of experience in public office and a national reputation when she became the first Black American and the first woman to seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 1972. Chisholm’s campaign slogan was “Unbought and Unbossed.”
She became the target of vehement sexism. One New York Times article from June 1972 described her appearance as, “[Not] beautiful. Her face is bony and angular, her nose wide and flat, her eyes small almost to beadiness, her neck and limbs scrawny. Her protruding teeth probably account in part for her noticeable lisp.”
As a two-term vice president who had a major role in governing under President Obama, Joe Biden knows what the office entails. In Harris, he selected a woman who not only helped him win the election but is also ready to govern.
November 2020 is a watershed year for African Americans, Asian Americans and women who’ve so long been excluded from so many aspects of politics.
This story is an updated and expanded version of an article originally published on Aug. 11, 2020. A misspelling of Dr. Lenora Fulani’s name in an early tweeted version of this story has now been corrected.
Student Loan Forgiveness And $1,200 Second Stimulus Check Included In New Stimulus Proposal
House Democrats want one more bite of the apple with student loan forgiveness.
Here’s what you need to know.
Student Loan Forgiveness
House Democrats pitched an ambitious $3 trillion new stimulus spending proposal - called the HEROES Act - that, among other benefits, includes a new, one-time stimulus check for $1,200 for each individual ($2,400 for married couples) and $1,200 for each dependent (with a maximum of three dependents). Also included - in addition to extended unemployment benefits - is a student loan forgiveness proposal to cancel $10,000 of student loan debt.
This student loan forgiveness proposal is pared back significantly from some previous student loan forgiveness proposals offered by presidential candidates and members of Congress. For example, the House stimulus bill proposal most closely mirrors a proposal from Senate Democrats, whose student loan forgiveness plan would forgive at least $10,000 of federal student loans for all borrowers. However, the current proposal is much smaller than an earlier House Democrats proposal that called for $30,000 of student loan forgiveness. The HEROES Act also proposes that the U.S. Treasury pay $10,000 of private student loan forgiveness (but not more than your total balance, if you owe less than $10,000).

Forgive Student Loans: Comparison To Presidential Candidates
The current proposal to forgive $10,000 of federal student loans is substantially less than proposals from three 2020 presidential candidates: Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. Here are recent student loan forgiveness plans from the three candidates:
For supporters of student loan forgiveness, $10,000 of student loan forgiveness is a much smaller than cancelling all $1.6 trillion of student loan debt forgiveness. Why is this current proposal smaller than student loan debt cancellation plans proposed by Biden, Sanders and Warren? Here are a few potential reasons why Democrats proposed $10,000 of student loan debt forgiveness:
Similar To Senate Plan: The $10,000 amount matches a similar plan offered in the U.S. Senate, which can help build support in the Senate.
Other Priorities: While student loans may be your top priority, legislators are balancing multiple high priority measures that are essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. Student loan debt forgiveness has relatively less bi-partisan support in both houses of Congress.
Help Struggling Borrowers: Borrowerswho default on their student loans have relatively low student loan balances. A lower student loan forgiveness amount could help these borrowers in particular.
Student Loan Repayment Options
While public leaders debate the future of student loan forgiveness, remember that you need a student loan repayment plan. These four options are a good place to start:

Fight Breaks out at Pusha-T’s Concert
Pusha T’s show at Toronto’s Danforth Music Hall was going great until a fight erupted! Pusha T is stating that he thinks people were “paid” to throw beer at him. Fans say people rushed the stage and then a physical altercation took place. Pusha T was not touched at all, but he feels as though that was intentionally set up. He feels that way so much that he comes back out on stage and performs the song “Infrared”. A song that has some subliminal shots at Drake. Could Drake be the reason for this outburst? That is the real question everyone wants to know. Sources have stated that many people were attacked on stage and three people were sent to the hospital. After the show, there was one person who was reportedly stabbed and is in critical condition. They are inverstigating on if that was linked to the outburst during the show.
